UNM 2020 Future Picture

UNM 2020: A View to the Horizon

The future will happen whether or not we act. Planning for it together, and bringing our collective wisdom, creativity and experience to the process, will make it a better future. Your participation in this process is critical if we are to act wisely together.

People everywhere and nowhere more than our University, are working harder than ever – asked to do more with less. The challenging economic environment makes it more important than ever that we set priorities for the future. We have designed this process to celebrate the diversity of ideas and capture the creative thinking of faculty, staff, students and the broader UNM community.

Our University has been a leader since it was founded over 123 years ago. Our schools are centers of excellence. Our faculty members and alumni are leaders around the world. Our outstanding students are committed to improve New Mexico and the world. Our staff members are among the best anywhere. Our discoveries have changed fields, and we have solved problems in New Mexico and around the world. Our research funding has grown and enrollment has increased. There is much of which we can be very proud!

The good news contrasts with a sobering economic picture that has resulted in substantial budget reductions. Added to that are local, statewide and global challenges of immense proportion that we must help to solve. As we look ahead, we must have sharp objectives and clear priorities.

We cannot do everything, but we want to do everything we do well. 6/28/2012 We do not propose a blank slate but rather embrace who we are today, our recent planning efforts and our current strategic initiatives where they contribute to our vision of UNM 2020.
